Division of Adult and Continuing Education 

Overview

ABS is a program withing the Division of Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) at LaGuardia Community College, The Adult Basic Skills (ABS) department offers free and low-cost classroom instruction (reading, writing and math skills) to adults over 19 years of age in both English and Spanish in adult basic education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation. The mission of ABS is to prepare adult continuing education students to earn a High School Equivalency diploma and to achieve their college and career pathways goals.

ABS’s free program is one of thirteen adult literacy programs in the City University of New York (CUNY). A combination of the New York State Education Department federal Workforce Investment Act (WIOA) grant  and the NYC Mayor’s Office funds the program.

ABS Tuition program offers low cost classes in both English and Spanish HSE. We are one of the very few programs in New York City that provides High School Equivalency preparation in Spanish.  

ABS is an official New York State High School Equivalency (HSE) Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) Testing Center funded by NYSED. ABS is scheduled to administer 26 exam sessions per year serving over 2,400 candidates in both English and Spanish, via both paper and computer based versions.
